The meanings of anachronism

This review aims to summarize the written production on the concept of anachronism in distinct fields of knowledge in recent decades. This overview shows anachronism is given several meanings (e.g., conceptual attribution, heuristic tool, professional taboo, and index of historical consciousness) and reveals strategies for dealing with it (e.g., the establishment of typologies and admission criteria, reaffirmation of the taboo, and radical criticism). Anachronism also plays a critical role in intellectual disputes and thinking about this concept provides an opportunity to rule over historiography. The conclusion is that anachronism is a meaningful, lasting, and polemical concept, whose normative value seems to undermine its own historical investigation.
