History, society, and culture at the foundations of influential Reader-Response theories, between the 1960s and 1990s

This article consists of a contribution to the state of the art of Reader-Response theories, that, due to its complexity, has provided great contributions to historical studies. However, we also identified that there was a great division between such currents, during the 1960s and 1990s: between those that avoided emphasizing the social and historical dimension of the act of reading and the theories that sought their foundations in social and historical actions to explain the reception of literary works. In this sense, we will address the German reception theories and the dissident currents that explored the social, and historical dimensions such as Stanley Fish's reader-response criticism and the empirical study of literature and cultural dimension as in the case of Gabriele Schwab's theoretical study on reading as cultural contact.
