Abstract

This article focuses on the institutional conditions for the internationalization of Portuguese historiography in the past 20 years. Its aim is to explain why the international historiographical community still has a limited knowledge about the Portuguese historical reality, and about the work carried out by Portuguese historians. The first part is comprised by a discussion of the contributions that were made within a debate promoted in 2003 by the e-Journal of Portuguese History. The second part of this article discusses the subsequent evolution of the Portuguese historiographical milieu, emphasizing the areas in which its internationalization has been more successful.
